The Alabama Department of Transportation has released new information on its progress on the new Intracoastal Waterway Bridge project.
Motorists should be aware that Canal Road will temporarily close next week for essential work.
According to ALDOT, Canal Road will be closed continuously from 6:30 AM on Monday, Feb. 23, through 6:30 PM on Friday, Feb. 27, and will allow crews to safely do the following:
• Install painting equipment for the steel bridge girders.
• Perform road widening east of the bridge.
• Complete paving near the south roundabout.
Detour signs will be in place directing motorists to use CR-4 (Cotton Creek Drive) as an alternate route.
According to ALDOT, this work is a key step toward completing the new bridge, which aims to reduce SR-59 congestion, improve emergency service access, and enhance safety during hurricane evacuations.
