The City of Gulf Shores will introduce the Healthways SilverSneakers® Fitness Program at the David L. Bodenhamer Recreation Center beginning September 1. The SilverSneakers program is designed exclusively for older adults and offers them a unique way to increase their levels of physical activity while motivating them to remain active.

“We take great pride in offering all of our residents and visitors with affordable, high quality opportunities to lead healthy lifestyles,” said Grant Brown, Recreation and Cultural Affairs Director. “The SilverSneakers program is a perfect fit for us and will give us the opportunity to engage more of our older population to help them stay healthy and physically fit.”

Through the SilverSneakers program, anyone with eligible Medicare health plans will receive a complimentary fitness membership to the Bodenhamer Recreation Center and will have the opportunity to take advantage of the facility’s wide range of amenities including its full service fitness room, racquetball courts, indoor heated pool and dry sauna.

In addition to the many fitness and aerobics classes already being offered, Recreation Manager Nicole Ard, says the facility will begin offering a SilverSneakers Classics class on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 2:00 p.m.

“The SilverSneakers Classics class is a great way to have a blast while staying fit,” said Ard. “Participants move to music as they make their way through a variety of exercises designed to increase muscular strength, range of movement and activities for daily living.”

To find out if you are eligible for the SilverSneakers fitness program, please contact your health plan provider.
